Title: Arcane Objects
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rustydog
Characters: Ianto
Ratings/warnings: G, no spoilers
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] tw100 challenge #143 Open and #123 Archives, and for "E" in my alphabet prompt table.

Occasionally, Ianto took his tea down into the archives and sat in vault 627, soaking in the ambience of arcane objects.

The very oldest books were stored here. In the early days, before secure storage, some of Torchwood's records had been written in code. It was easy to decipher if you knew enough about the organization, but to Ianto's knowledge, he was the only person in his lifetime who had even tried.

So he relaxed, breathed the scents of dust, leather and aging paper, and enjoyed the knowledge that only he and Jack, of all the world, could read these books.

This is lovely... even if Ianto is drinking tea. (Yeah, I'm a total coffee snob.)

Hee, thanks.

And hmm. Now I'm wondering why I had him drinking tea. Have we ever seen him drinking tea? (I drink both, so I don't think it's a prejudice on my part. *g*) I guess I'll claim I meant the meal. Heh.

I can't recall. I just assume that he doesn't -- an attitude partly based on his report on cults that was on the BBC website. It was most likely written in jest, but Ianto/coffee are my OTP. Having him drink tea is like he's cheating. ;-)

I think we've seen Ianto drink tea, but I can't remember where. That feels like a challenge! Let's see if I can find it.

In any case, I like it that you had him with his tea - secretively, far away from all the others, with the secret books. It's the hidden Ianto, the man no one sees. It's fitting.

Love the drabble - I love the smell and texture of old books, it's like meeting someone from the past.

According to 'Risk Assessment' (novel so only semi-canon) tea is something of a mystery to Ianto. Jack takes it as a bit of a slight when Ianto starts drinking coffee to please Agnes rather than coffee as he's always done up to that point.

Maybe that's the scene I was failing to remember.

I guess if he doesn't often drink it, and it would ruin his rep or something, I like him doing it that way. :) Thanks.
