Userpic drabble challenge: Faithful

From [livejournal.com profile] donutsweeper: Take a look at your default userpic. If you're like me you see it so often you've almost stopped seeing it at all, so take a good look at it. Now, using your avatar as inspiration, write a drabble.

Title: Faithful
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Author's Note: My default pic is a DOG. It was a challenge to make it a fannish drabble!

Nowhere he ended up on investigation should have surprised Jack, but, somehow, raccoon hunting in 1956 Eastern Oklahoma did.

He carried the lantern for his companion, a local farmer. Two lithe, coppery hounds bayed like bells through the darkness ahead. Their quarry treed and dispatched, Jack asked if the farmer had ever encountered trouble in the forest at night.

"Yup," he replied thoughtfully. "Used to. But them dogs, now—" Jack could just make them out, wagging their tails madly, sniffing the mouldering leaves.

"Don’t stay in trouble long with them fellers by my side. Never doubted ‘em, never will."

Yep you nailed it all right.
Love the farmer's voice by the way I can totally hear it - I have a vague notion he's chewing tobacco too.

You're probably right about the tobacco! He wouldn't even need a spit cup, out in the woods. :)

Thank you!

Thank you! And thanks for the idea, it was the perfect thing to do while I waited for the mail. :)
