Jack sent Gwen out for food, then commenced spying on her work.

The papers scattered about were marked all over with highlighter pen and messy, penciled notes that seemed to connect documents with progressive references. Photographs, an obituary, even a book report...

How could this possibly be related to the alien they needed to neutralize?

A starred paragraph in an amateur-looking newsletter caught his eye. School singing contest: Carys Fletcher, first prize. Jack pictured the girl in their cell, a bit younger, standing nervously on a dark stage with a poorly-tuned piano ringing behind her...

Oh. Now that was clever.
