Title: It's the End of the World as We Know It
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rustydog
Characters: none
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Children of Earth Day 1
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] tw100 challenge 136, Fire and Ice. Another dark one, I'm sorry!

When the world as we know it ends, the ground cracks open, exposing the bones it has sheltered for so long; coffins surface and float downriver: not even the dead are undisturbed.

*

These souls died in the service of Torchwood, or the Rift made them Torchwood's problem. Their eternal reward was a body bag, a steel drawer, and subzero. Not exactly serene, but it was quiet.

...Until fire blew apart their hundreds of chilly tombs, consumed some and left the others exposed to moisture and creatures of decay. When the world ends, even the dead may not rest in peace.

Oh I really like this. Lovely imagery.

I do hope that we find out a bit more about the aftermath of the Hub explosion if/when series 4 arrives. I particularly want to find out what they do with Myfanwy's body...

Thank you very much! I've been kind of obsessed with the idea of the aftermath of the Hub, too. There's *so* much down there and I'm sure retrieval/excavation efforts could get political as well as a security concern.

what they do with Myfanwy's body

No no no, see, Myfanwy escaped! She wasn't in the Hub when it exploded! ::covers ears and lives in blissful ignorance::

*g*

Myfanwy went home between the end of S2 and CoE. *nods* That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Thank you! There's so much down there, even now, I'm sure.

I wonder if they'll address any of that.

I'm inclined to be... not so optimistic, but I always have a kernel of hope.

And, of course, there's always fic. :)

...I have goosebumps now. You write such wonderful imagery, and that first line seems very T.S. Eliot to me.

Thank you so much! ::passes warm tea::

It took awhile to wrangle these images into any kind of shape. They wanted to run away with me. And I wasn't able to work in the picture of frost on the corpses' eyebrows...

Well, you'll just have to work that into something else someday. *nods*
