Torchwood drabble: Polypodium polypodioides

Title: Polypodium polypodioides
Author: [livejournal.com profile] rustydog
Characters: Gwen, Owen
Rating: G
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] tw100's challenge #116 - Resurrection and [livejournal.com profile] writercon100. Set between s1 and s2.

"This plant's dead," Gwen observed while visiting Owen in the new botany lab.

Owen glanced over. "Nah, that's resurrection fern, look." He took a bottle, spritzing the curled leaves twice. "Tomorrow it'll be green, right as rain. It 'dies' without water and comes back when it gets some."

Gwen touched the brown fronds experimentally. "It really looks dead."

Owen shrugged. "It still grows in the Americas. I was going to get rid of it, actually—it's not alien, just in the wrong place and time."

Gwen felt a surprising pang. "No, keep it. I think Jack would like it."

I read it and thought it was nice, and then I reread it, noting the setting the specification of the new botany lab and suddenly it was heartbreaking. Wonderful.

Thanks.

:) Thanks. It was the *only* thing that came to mind with "resurrection" - tell you where my brain is I guess.

Thank you so much!

In a happy plant-filled place?

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely plant filled, and I suppose a place filled with plants can't be entirely unhappy.

Unless they are carnivorous cacti.

Oh, that's lovely. Also, at first it made me think of this (http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/8039/). Plants are so cool.

Ow ow ow ow ow ow.

[identity profile] rustydog.livejournal.com 2009-04-16 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
Very true, though in that case I guess my problems would be over quickly!

Luckily Jack's only come across cannibalistic cacti. And as long as you stay out of their way when they're hunting, you're safe.

Thank you. And I love the "dinosaur plant"! Enjoys life so much it survived the Ice Age indeed.

lovely

Awww. That's better than a Phoenix! Plants are good, resurrecting plants out of their time are the bees knees.

Very nicely done!
