tw100 challenge #148 England. This is Toshiko as a child, and I've gone with the 1975 birthdate rather than the 1981 one, making Tosh eleven or so when her family moved back to England.
Crushed
Toshiko disliked her new school. The language wasn't a problem, nor the food, though that was heavy and bland, and she hated the clatter of the metal fork between her teeth.
But she didn't understand why the English children seemed to hate her. Thinking perhaps she'd been expected to introduce herself with gifts, Toshiko made twenty tiny origami lions, arrived early in the morning, and placed one on each student's desk.
When her classmates entered, Tosh watched hopefully as their confusion turned to... casual disdain, and the lions were thrown at other students and finally crushed underfoot. Her heart sank.
A/N: I didn't like leaving Tosh the way the first drabble ended, so I wrote a followup.
Claudia
In Osaka, Toshiko's parents had always spoken of England as if it were a wonderful place. Tosh was finding the reality very disappointing.
After school on the day of her disastrous gifts, she tried to leave as quickly as possible, without looking at anyone. She was startled when someone said her name and tugged her sleeve. It was a classmate, a girl called Claudia. Tosh cringed preemptively.
But Claudia held out her fist and opened it to reveal five of the miniature paper lions. "I rescued them from the bin," she explained shyly. "They're so pretty. Would you teach me?"
